Green Relationship: Toyota and Tesla.

It appears that there is a power partnership forming in California.  Toyota, emerging from recent bad publicity and numerous recalls, recently purchased $50 million in Tesla common stock, a welcomed boost for the electric car company.

Tesla purchased the recently vacated NUMMI facility in Fremont, Calif.  Tesla plans to use the facility to produce its upcoming Model S, and future models.

The NUMMI plant is home to Toyota's Production System, known for its heightened quality, efficiency, and cleanliness.  The NUMMI plant was recently shut down after Toyota and GM vacated it.

With Toyota now invested in Tesla, one would hope to see a crossover of technology.

Toyota offers Tesla the avenue that Ford does to Mazda in being a competitor in the auto market.

Tesla's first car. the Tesla Roadster was designed to be an electric sports car, though has been plagued with reliability issues, something Toyota could help the company with.

Toyota may benefit from Tesla from Tesla's sports car mind set.  Possibly a hybrid system that powers its FT-86 Concept?

GM in Talks With Google for Ford Sync Rival

GM is not going to let Ford and Microsoft gallop off into the automotive technology segment sunset without offering its own infotainment system.

GM is reportedly in talks with Google to incorporate the Android OS into future GM vehicles.  Though the possible system may not be a direct rival to Ford's Sync and future MyFord system as it could allow users more interactive use through outside devices.

A third party OS would render most of GM's own OnStar features obsolete, yet its crash response is still something unique of OnStar.

Some have also considered a collaboration between GM and Apple, though software compatibility between the car and interface may pose problems.  Also, with Apple being a smaller segment of the technology world amongst the mainstream car buying community, it could alienate some buyers.

Consumers should not expect to a hear any confirmation until sometime in 2011.

Hummer Hit With Recall

There is nothing liking kicking an already dead horse, yet the NHTSA is at it again.  Hummer is recalling 200,000 2006 to 2010 Hummer H3s and H3Ts where a fake hood vent could potentially become dislodged and strike another car.

The fix?  Glue, of course.

Ford and Mazda to Continue Partnership

It looks like Ford and Mazda won't be walking separate paths after Ford recently sold its controlling share in Mazda. Both automakers plan to continue working together on advanced technologies, and possible sharing of platforms again.

Masaharu Yamaki, a Mazda board member said, "Ford will remain an important partner for Mazda."

Both companies benefit from the partnership. Mazda is too small to directly compete with Ford, while Ford collaborates with Mazda on platforms and small engine technology.

Toyota Investigated for Recall Delay

It looks like Toyota's recent recall woes are far from over.  The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration is investigating if Toyota is at fault for delaying a recall involving the steering linkage failures, which could result in loss of steering control.

The recall involved almost 1 million Toyota pickups, T100's, and 4Runners built from 1989 to 1998.

Toyota first issued a recall in Japan in 2004 for the linkage failures, but did not issue one in the U.S. until September of 2005.

Toyota commented saying that the U.S. and Japan had different driving standards and a similar failure was unlikely.

This type of delay islead to Toyota's fine of $16.4 million last month when it had issued a recall in Europe regarding sticky acceleration pedals but did not do so in the U.S. until January of this year.

Under Federal law, all automakers must notify the NHTSA within five days of learning of a defect.  Not complying could lead to a $16.4 million fine; the maximum allowed.

Column: Double Stuffed GM

I was walking to my car in the local Wal-Mart parking lot when I had a flash of déjà-vu. Sitting next to one another was a 2010 Chevy Traverse and a 2010 Buick Enclave. These two cars have the same sleek body panels, a wide, I-want-to-eat-you grille, and trademark haunch over the rear tires.

Now, if anyone remembers what caused General Motor Corp’s much-needed bailout, it was their practice of selling the same car, to the same consumer, with different brands’ badges plastered on them, especially with their truck lines.

Back in the 1990s, GM was notorious for selling the same car under different brands. They had the GMC Sierra and the Chevy Silverado. It was the exact same truck, though sold under different brands and different prices (with varying options, of course). There were points when they would be the exact same vehicle. In all actuality, it is still the same truck

One would hope a company that technically went out of business, would understand, and learn from, its mistakes; it appears not.

GM’s flagship Buick is a rebadged Opel Insignia, which for the moment is not slated for release in the U.S., yet it is so similar, that the only difference is the grille insert.

The new Buick is, of course, treading on Cadillac’s feet, with a complete revamp of their product lineup coming soon. Both are considered luxury cars that appeal to the same market; and both are offered from GM.

One could accuse Ford Motor Corp. of practicing the same corporate suicidal moves, but unlike GM, each brand they rebadged, has its own market.

No Ford is as nice as Mercury, and no Mercury is as nice as Lincoln. Ford is the working man’s car, while Mercury is almost exclusively marketed to women. Lincoln fills in Ford’s product lineup by offering an exclusive luxury car, with numerous amenities, something Ford and Mercury do not offer.

What does the General need to do to pull itself into profitability? Some saw GM’s restructuring as obscure and reckless, dropping popular brand like Pontiac and Saturn in favor of GMC and Buick.

GM needs to drop Buick, as much as I have a soft spot for them from owning one, and push their sleek new Cadillac offering. GMC should be put out to pasture like Hummer was, while reviving Saturn as their fuel efficient line.

Chevrolet should be an equivalent to Ford: a working man’s car. Pontiac should be revived as a sports car brand, working off Australian’s Holden brand supply of fast, powerful car lineup.

GM was restructured by the government, which demanded a profitable, sustainable company. I trust them; they are professionals in the automotive business. Wait? You didn’t know that? Don’t worry, neither did I.

GM Facilities Go Green

GM announced in 2008 it would convert half of its major manufacturing facilities worldwide to landfill free operation by the end of this year.

Currently, 62 GM plants operate at a "zero landfill" status, with 97 percent of materials recycled or reused, and about three percent converted into energy at waste-to-energy facilities.

The company recycles many materials like steel, alloy, paper, and cardboard, that are used again, or are manufactured into a secondary product.

GM is the only automotive company to be inducted into the U.S. EPA WasteWise Hall of Fame

Toyota Expands Tundra Rust Recall

In October of 2009, Toyota recalled 110,000 2000 to 2003 Toyota Tundras due to extensively rusty frames. Now, Toyota has expanded that recall through April 2012, as it has also expanded the covered parts.

Toyota has expanded the original, minimal, coverage that focused on three main cross members in the rear of the truck that would rust to the point of failure. Now the recall encompasses most of the frame.

In order to be covered by the recall, the rust must create holes at least ten-millimeters in diameter. Also, the truck must be in good quality and if it meets the remaining requirements (basically if the truck isn't complete junk), Toyota will replace the frame replacement on the Tundra.

Expected completion time is four to five days, as the entire cab and bed, brake lines, wiring, and suspension will have to be removed. This is after the one to two week waiting period for the frame to arrive after the dealer places the order.

Aston Martin V12 Vantage Coming State Side

What is more enticing that a 6.0L V12 producing 512 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of twist, while displaying the pinnacle of European luxury performance, and styling?

How about parking it in your driveway?

Aston Martin has officially announced the sale of the V12 Vantage in the U.S. later this year with the launch of the Carbon Black special edition.

Why the change in Aston Martin's offering? Money, of course. After some market research Aston Martin had solid grounds, and a demand, to bring the V12 here.

Of course there will be some minor changes to the car before it can, "satisfy the specific requirements of the American Market" (fifteen cup-holders?). There could be some engine tuning, the addition of catalytic converter units, and some structural modifications to meet U.S. crash and safety standards. Yet, there has been no official release on all the changes that may occur.

So if you have the cash, Aston Martin is taking orders; hurry up.

Mercedes-Benz Unveils New V8 and V6 Engine

It seems that no matter what new fuel economy regulations or enviromental standars are enacted around the world, auto companies are finding new ways to still deliver the ponies.

Mercedes is offering two newly designed engines, a 3.5L V6 and 4.7L V8; engines that whisper green, while still screaming performance.

The V6 puts out 306 horsepower and 272 lb-ft of torque while getting a decent 30.9 mpg.

The 4.7L V8 hammers out a whopping 435 horsepwer and 516 lb-ft of torque while still managing almost 25 mpg; though it will be far from slow, with 442 lb-ft of torque available at 1,600 rpm, and all 516 lb-ft pumping at just 1,800 rpm.

Direct injection, which has become a favorite amongst auto companies, helps boost fuel economy without sarcaficing power. The 4.7L recieves a twin-turbo set up, to help the V8 be a little more green. Also, the V6 goes to a 60-degree V-layout, dumping the old 90-degree setup. Added on both engines is a start-stop function.

These two new engines join Mercedes' new AMG 5.5L twin-turbo V8 that produces 571 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque while achieveing a respectable 22 mpg.

GM Expanding Global Battery Systems Lab

Ever wonder what you could do with $8 million dollars...a lot actually; you could buy a slew of Enzos, a plethora of Corvettes, or mayeb even a few Veyrons.  Though if you are GM, what do you do?  You double the size of your battery systems lab.

The automaker is expanding its Warren, Mich. facility from 30,000 sq. ft. to 63,000 sq. ft., expanding the already largest advanced automobile battery lab in the U.S.  Construction begins this month, with the scheduled completion sometime this summer.

The expansion will enhance six new areas:
  • Safety and Tolerance
  • Buildup and Tear down
  • Manufacturing and Engineering
  • Charger Development and Integration
  • Thermal Development
  • Battery Storage
This will allow GM more "in-house" control over development and production of its electric drivetrains.

GM to Upgrade Brake Override Software

With Toyota's current scrutiny from the U.S. Government and the NHTSA, auto companies are taking extra care in their electronic braking and acceleration software.

The system is expected to be applied globally by the end of 2012

Ford Readies Supercharged 5.0 for Australian Falcon

It looks like Ford has more plans for its Coyote V8 engine than stuffing it under the hood of the 2011 Mustang.  Ford, to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Falcon, will supercharge the 5.0L V8 Mustang engine for the Australian car.

The base is expected to produce 422 horsepower.  Though consumers can expect 450 horses out of the Falcon FPV GT, and a whopping 536 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque.

GM Works on Twin-Turbo to Compete with Ford

It looks as if General Motors is not letting Ford get away too quickly in the forced induction race. GM Insider has confirmed that GM will be producing its own turbocharged engine.

Expect the engine to debut in late 2011 or early 2012 in the Cadillac XTS, and maybe later in the next Chevrolet Camaro.

Viper Club of America to Distibute OEM Parts

With the future of the Dodge Viper looking bleak, current owners were planning on getting replacement parts directly from Dodge, though that will not be the case.

The Viper Club of America, formed in 1995 between Dodge and Viper owners, represents over 25,000 members. The club as agreed to acquire select parts, accessories, and rare historical items directly from the manufacturer to offer to Viper owners.

In order to sell these items to owners, Viper Club of America has formed the Viper Parts of America, the venue to buy the acquired parts.

Cadillac's Return to Europe

Europe is known for its lavish luxury cars; Bentley, Mercedes, BMW, and Cadillac? This may just be the case with the establishment of Cadillac Europe. The design of the entity is to market and distribute a few select models from the Cadillac lineup to European customers.

Cadillac it making its first European splash with previewing the Cadillac CTS at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. The CTS is slated to arrive in Europe later this fall.

Ford Laysoff Workers at Flat Rock

With sales down, Ford is laying off 900 employees, mostly hourly manufacturing workers, from the AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Mich., the home of the Ford Mustang. This layoff is the occurrence of many factors; the tough economic situation, stiff competition from the Chevy Camaro, and Ford introduction of new engine for the Mustang this summer, with many potential buyers waiting until the new model is available.

The company will reduce shifts from two to one on July 12, though it will be increasing the pace of assembly at the plant according to Ford spokeswoman Marcey Evans. The Flat Rock plant employs 2,300 people.

Ford Mustang sales were down 27 percent last year, allowing the Camaro to come with 5,000 units of outselling the Ford Mustang, something that has not happened since 1985.

Buick Looking to New Coupe

I will be the first to admit, I was excited when I heard about the new Buick Regal; a homage to the Buick people grew to love. One thing I was not excited about was the new Regal's only offering came in the form of a sedan. Even the high-performance GS Concept, that will likely begin production soon, still left me empty about the future of Buick. Buick needs something like the 1987 GNX to spicin' its lineup; developed by McLaren/ACS and underrated at 276 horsepower is something Buick you can use to lure in younger buyers.

Accordint to John Cafaro, Buicks director of design, a coupe is needed, not only to widen its offering to a larger demographic of car buyers, but also make a statement that Buick is not for the older genereations, "A coupe is definately where you say, 'I'm Back'."

According to two dealers present at a brand meeting recently, speculation is suggesting that the new small car will carry the Mercury Tracer nameplate. If the dealers that spoke with Automotive News are correct, the new small car will be badged off of the Michigan-built, 2011 Ford Focus.

Ford is hoping to create more buzz with its Mercury lineup, especially now that it is dropping the Grand Marquis, and Mountaineer.

Ford, GM Gain from Toyota's Woes

With Toyota's current recall woes and less then positive public approval, Edmunds.com, a leading authority in the automotive industry, has changed its 2010 outlook for the automotive market landscape.

Edmunds is predicting that Toyota's lost in sales be Ford's gain. Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Jessica Caldwell, at the Chicago auto show, said, "It now seems clear that Ford will overtake Toyota to reclaim its position as the second largest automaker in the U.S. market."

With Ford releasing new models this year, they are aimed to gain market share. The new Fiesta goes on sale this summer, with pre-sales starting on Monday. The new, redesigned Ford Focus is slated to go on sale this fall.

Analysis shows that Toyota's loss is a gain for everyone; GM, Chrysler, Honda, Nissan, and Hyundai all gaining in 2010. During Toyota's recall woes, GM, Ford, and Hyundai have all been running incentive programs to draw Toyota customers, and according to Edmunds analysts, the programs appear to be working.

GM's New Facilites Work Without UAW

It appears that GM's new facilities opening are missing one key, historical group; the United Auto Workers union

The facility designated to produce the lithium-ion batteries in a suburb of Detroit for the Chevy Volt are currently being built without any UAW labor. Delphi is set to open a plant in Indian, lacking the presence of the UAW as well.

This shows that the UAW is losing hold over the auto companies, though it should help reduce the cost of the Volt, and hopefully return the company back to profitability.
Many UAW workers and organizers are upset, believing these new jobs would go to the them. George Shortwell, a retired GM employee said, "We were told that all the concessions we made would make us competitive for new jobs. What happened with these jobs?"

More Woes for Toyota

Eighty complaints have rolled into the NHTSA of wandering cars, and difficult lane management on the 2009 and 2010 Toyota Corollas.

The NHTSA said that it is looking into the complaints to see if an investigation is necessary.

Ford to Fix Fusion & Mercury Milan Hybrid Break Issue

Ford Motor Co. announced Thursday that it has a fix for the software that operates the brakes in its Fusion and Milan Hybrid models.

Drivers may feel a loss of pedal feedback, even though they still have full braking capabilities. The brakes in hybrid cars are more than just pads and rotors; the electric motors also help slow the car as well, helping to recharge the batteries. In some cases the Fusion bypasses the "regenerative braking" phase, causing the loss of pedal feel, while relying on the hydraulic brakes.

Owners are asked to bring their cars in for the patch, even if they have not experienced any braking problems.

Next-Generation Camaro to Shrink

With the next-generation Camaro expected to debut in 2014 as a 2015 model, consumers should expect a smaller, more fuel efficient Camaro.

According to Motor Trend, GM has okay'd the development of the next-generation Camaro to be built upon the new rear-wheel Alpha platform. The wheel base is expected to remain the same, though the overall length of the car could be as much as a foot shorter.

With the downsizing of the body, the engine bay will also be shrinking. The next-generation Camaro will likely drop its V8 in favor of a supercharged or turbocharged version of GM's 3.6L direct injection V6 engine.

Tesla To End Roadster

If you are a fan of the Tesla Roadster, but never snatched one up; you may want to get out there. Tesla is planning to kill off the electric sports car sometime in 2011. Tesla is not planning a replacement until sometime in 2013, if anything ends up on the road then.

Tesla is betting on the success of its new sedan, the Model S, to help spike profits. Though ending the production of the Roadster creates a dire situation; Tesla has no car to sell, and with that, no revenue coming in.

2011 Shelby GT500 Order Guide Leaked

The Internet is to cars as Deep Throat is to Nixon; nothing can stay hidden forever. Someone, somewhere, always has a photo that they have to post or some document to publish, and yesterday was no different. Bpmurr of ModularFords.com posted the PDF of the possible order guide for the 2011 Shelby GT500.

The first important change is the new 5.4-liter aluminum block 4V V8, supercharged of course. What is not known is how much weight this will shave off. Also horsepower is still not known, though the Ford GT's 5.4-liter aluminum V8 was good for 550 horses.

A new SVT Performance Package is available for 2011. Upgraded is the standard 3.55 axle ratio to a 3.73 ratio. Also included are 19''x9.5'' front tires and 20''x9.5'' rear tires. Though later in the guide it states that the rear tires offered in the SVT package are 20''x10''.

For the first time, the 2011 GT500 is available with the glass roof option. Standard are HID headlamps. Two new colors, Race Red and Ingot Silver Metallic, replace Torch Red and Brilliant Silver Metallic. Other new features are MyKeyTM, Electric Power Assist Steering, and a HD radio.

What will the 2011 Shelby GT500 offer in power and performance, already offering a great driving experience. We will just have to wait for the first test drive to find out.

2011 Shelby GT350 Released

Shelby America unveiled the 2011 GT350 in Scottsdale, Arizona last night at the opening for the Barrett-Jackson Collector car auction. "Our Shelby GT350 ruled its class at the track and was feared by GM and Chrysler on the street. Enthusiasts have anticipated the GT350's return since it went out of production in 1970. Now my band of hot rodders has created a car worthy of the name," said Carroll Shelby, founder of Shelby America.

Based off of the 2011 Mustang GT and the new, 5.0 engine, Shelby added a supercharger, with the help of Ford Racing, to boost horsepower to 500. Shelby worked with Vince LaViolette, Andrew Smidt, Walter Cardenas, and Larry Wood, former Ford and Hot Wheels designer to integrate the retro styling of the GT350 into the modern 2011 Ford Mustang GT.

Ford Racing upgraded the suspension, adding new springs, struts, sway bars, and adjustable caster/camber plates. The GT350 also has Baer six-piston front brakes and 14'' ERADISPEED rotors in the rear. Added to the retro-aggressive design of the new 2011 Mustang is a new front and rear fascia with a center exit Borla exhaust.
